Amarnath located in Jammu and Kashmir is a popular
Hindu pilgrimage site. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this Temple is one of the most revered Hindu pilgrimage places in
India.
The cave is situated at an altitude of 3,888 m
(12,756 ft), about 141 km
from Srinagar, the capital of
Jammu and Kashmir and is reached through Pahalgam town. Surrounded by snowy mountains the
cave itself is covered with snow most of the year except for a short period of
time in summer when it is opened for pilgrims.
According to Hindu
mythology it is believed that this is where Lord Shiva explained the secret of
life and eternity to his wife Parvati. Inside
the Amarnath cave, the stalagmite is formed due to freezing of water drops that
fall from the roof of the cave on to the floor which grows up vertically from
the cave floor resembling the shape of a Shiva
Linga. The ice Shiva Ling
forms between the months of May to August and then gradually melts away. The
other ice formations in this cave represent Shiv and Parvati's son Ganesh.
Thousands of Hindu devotees make an annual
pilgrimage to the Amarnath cave on challenging mountainous terrain to see the
Linga Shaped ice stalagmite to show their devotion to Lord Shiva.
